Some days, when I am just sitting around scribbling, I go into what I have come to call my “zone”, for want of a better word.
It is a time when, if left undisturbed, I can produce reams and reams of meaningful, creative, imaginative work.
But since like all of us I work in a world full of distractions, I might be disturbed by a phone call or someone at the door, and once I am back I am lost. I cannot remember for the life of me where the whole thing was going, and then I might as well give up.
I try not to pick up calls when I am writing, not switch on any music or the television, and try to write everyday at the same time. My brains adapt to that routine pretty well I think, and most of the times I can marshal my thoughts and enter my “zone” pretty much on a regular basis.
It may not work for everyone, but I find that a regular writing habit induces that “zone”. In fact, if I write something every day at certain fixed hours, chances are that I can slowly get into the “zone” at will.
A regularized writing routine could just be the magic wand to keep your muse at your beck and call.
Thanks for your comment, Vonnie, and I am sorry I have not been around much.
i know how you feel. I hate when I’m there, ideas are flowing, everything’s coming together, then WHAM, snatched out of it by a phone call or something. blah
