Writing Prompt: ANTAGONIST.
Provided by: Marian Allen, who is a fellow A to Z challenge participant. Go visit her! (after you’ve finished reading my post, of course ..:)…)
Genre: Fiction/Flash
————–
I‘m my own antagonist. Ask anyone, especially my doctor in her white suit, and they’ll tell you I need to be watched, and you need to watch yourself around me. Which is why they put me in this opium-scented white room, in white clothes, so I would not see colors. Colors upset me, you see, and they’re scared of me when I’m upset. White reminds me of my clan.
I’m calm enough usually, especially when the doctor is here. It is a she, I know that, because her voice trills out of her round face-mask , playing on me, calming my nerves down, one by one. That is her job.
But through my half-closed eyes I see red. A silken wire of red has escaped her white hairnet, and now I have to see all of it. I’m going to grip her hand when she is not looking, and rip that mask away. But her hum is making me drowsy, my hands heavy.
And she is gone. They must have realized something was upsetting me, they monitor my heart from the outside. But now I know her hair is red.
I’ll wait till she comes in next time.

I still need prompts for the rest of the alphabet, so keep them coming! I’m tweeting A to Z posts at #atozchallenge: mine, and the others’ I like!
Thanks and shout-outs to organisers Arlee Bird (Tossing It Out) , Jeffrey Beesler’s (World of the Scribe), Alex J. Cavanaugh (Alex J. Cavanaugh) , Jen Daiker ( Unedited), Candace Ganger (The Misadventures in Candyland) , Karen J Gowen (Coming Down the Mountain) , Talli Roland , Stephen Tremp (Breakthrough Blogs )
Great beginning and we are off! Nice to meet you! Brilliant idea, I must say~
This is great! I love the idea of using a writing prompt for the challenge. Looking forward to reading more! 🙂
Thanks! I’ve found other A-Zers doing fiction as well. This whole challenge is a great idea!
I love this!! I’m so glad you’re participating in the Challenge!

Great writing. I thoroughly enjoyed and can’t wait for B! I like your website and your links to other good spots for writers. I have put myself on your follow list.
B is already up, hope you’ll like it. Thanks for your kind words.

Thanks Toby! Aloha right back at you 🙂
Very clever, and an awesome “writerly” way to meet the challenge.
I’m a writer, so I guess I’m writerly by nature 🙂 Thank you, and please visit again.
Antagonists are awesome. And April is going to be astonishingly crazy. Good luck fellow A-Zer!

April is already crazy, and we’re on the 1st! Good luck to you too!
Interesting use of the word “antagonist”. I plan to use words to spur on creative flash fiction. Good luck with the challenge!
Then you’re like me. Thank you for the visit, and the comment!
Making the challenge rounds – Dani here!

Thanks Dani, I’ll set off for another round soon!
Yup, the lady with the strand of red hair will return. You’re really creative. Man, you guys are good. I am loving this challenge so much. Yes, she is your antagonist.:)
Lemon, you’re quite good yourself 😉
Great start to the Challenge! I did a series on Villaions to close out 2010 and had some guest bloggers help. It sure is fun to develop those antagonsits!
Thanks Stephen, hope I can meet this challenge !
Wow, so you’ll be writing short stories for all the days? fantastic. I’ll be checking them out.
Thanks Myne. Yes, I’ll try and do flash fiction throughout.
Disturbing, but interesting! Like all good antagonists. Look forward to reading more of your posts!
Thanks, Tamara :). Not all of my posts will have antagonists though.
Great A! I love antagonists (in fiction, anyway) and I love this.
Thanks, Talli! And I took one of your prompts for C!
Great piece. I like the idea of having writing prompts for this. Well written, and glad to meet you 🙂
Rosie
East for Green Eyes
Thanks Rosie :). Do send me some prompts!
Holy Frijoles! This antagonist is frightening. LOVED it and so can’t wait to read your other posts. Exellent job!
Visiting from the A to Z Challenge. Happy Friday! 🙂
Thanks Larri. Do come back 🙂 and happy A-Z to you as well!
prompts- hmmm check out this site with prompt generator:

Summer, the idea is to make this somewhat personal. I can easily pick prompts myself, but getting them from my readers is fun and challenging.
Great first post! The antagonist is one of the elements I most enjoy crafting. Good luck on the challenge!
Thanks, Paul, and good luck to you as well!
Wow, that was creepy and awesome at the same time. Can’t wait to see more. Happy challenge btw!
Thanks 🙂 B and C are scheduled, am working on D…need help with prompts for E.WIll I make it Z? Happy A2Z to you too!
Thanks Dafeenah, you’re too kind. Thanks for visiting me via A-Z…this is so exciting!
I absolutely love your writing style. I could feel the sterility of the room as I read your post and the strand of red shining against the white. Beautiful!
Happy A-Z!! Dafeenah
Thanks for your kind words, Sheri, and I hope you stop by again for the other letters of the alphabet. And maybe suggest a writing-prompt for some of the letters 😉
What a great idea with the writing prompts!! I loved this. Nicely done. My mc sees colors so this was very relative. Glad to meet you.
Mara, yes it is. I’m not sure I’m up to it, but I won’t find out unless I try. Thanks for your comment, and I hope you get to write fiction for A-Z
I like that you wrote a piece of fiction. I’m going to try to incorporate some into the month, as well. It certainly is a challenge to post this many days in a row!
Wonderfully disturbing. I especially love the ambiguity of the main character.
Thanks Alex. This character will work his way into one of my stories somewhere, I’m sure. I’m glad you find him disturbing. He is meant to be.
The ultimate challenge (guaranteed to put you in the Antagonist’s place) would be to continue paragraphs of this story with the letter of the day. 🙂
Wonderful, creepy little story you have here!
D could be demented…
If I live through the challenge this year, I’ll do it for the next one 🙂
And that is the second suggestion for ‘demented’ wonder whether it is my piece that is inspiring the prompt lol…thankyou, both for your support on twitter, and your comment here.
fiction pieces are my favorite.. I am going to be working in a few… in this challenge you can bet…
Hope to see your fiction pieces 🙂
Creepy and very cool!
Thanks Heather…help me be creepier and cooler with some word-prompts!
Glad you’re Tweeting as well! What other prompts do you need? Since I’m a science fiction writer, I say space for S.
Thankyou, thankyou..space it is :)! I’m tweeting this yes, hoping to find more and more links where the posts are up. It gets so disappointing to click on the link on the list and find no relevant post…with tweeted links, I’m sure.
Creepy, just the way I like it! Great post and can’t wait to see whats next.
🙂 Thankyou. B and C are scheduled…but I need more writing prompts if I’m to go somewhere with this!
Hey country mate! A prompt and fiction, that’s different. We look forward to more…
Different, but not very easy. Thanks for visiting….just commented on your blog!
I love flash fiction! Wonderful piece!
Marian Allen
Fantasies, mysteries, comedies, recipes
Well, it is your prompt I used, so I’m glad you like it 🙂
That is one creepy character you’ve created there. Fascinating to think that that character might never have come into existence had this blog challenge not arrived. Looking forward to reading your B.
Yep, he’s creepy. Wonder which part of my head he lived in :). B is scheduled, and will post in a few hours. It isn’t very creepy, but I”m hoping you’ll like it
Ooh, I love this. I’m going a bit demented trying to figure out how I’m going to visit everyone, but I decided to break the list up and visit different people every day. Seems the most sensible way.
Speaking of which, how about ‘demented’ for D!?
I’m planning to visit back those who visit me, and then to catch posts from twitter and my Google reader. Not much of a plan, but I’ve visited about 30 blogs today…which isn’t bad considering I did other things as well, including working my way up to C. Bless you for the prompt, might end up using it 🙂
Oh my word! That left me wanting to read more.
😀
Misha, you shall have more. Only not of this story, for the time being. Tomorrow’s story on the B-word is already scheduled 🙂
Hints of horror – creepy – I like it, but want to know what happens next … oops, it’s flash fiction! Still, you could write the continuing story – after you reach Z of course…..
Linn, I’m tempted to continue, partly because I don’t know either! 🙂 Thanks for your visit, and happy A2Z !
Great post antagonist!
Denise<3
Thanks, Denise. And I’m not the antagonist, just his humble Creator, lol
excellent approach! I’m hooked.
come on over and visit me some time at Jan Morrison
Do come back again, Jan. I’ll head over to your blog soon!
I shall stay away from the white room, glad my hair is not red!
Sheila, thanks! Glad I was able to get you into the story!
What fun! Looking forward to B…
B has been scheduled to post in another 12 hours or so :).
Wonderful start to your A to Z, shall look forward to the others. Carole.
Thanks, Carole! This challenge is oodles of fun 🙂
Ooo…clapping my hands together. I love the theme for you A to Z Challenge!
Thanks, Ellie. I have the B done, now struggling with C!
wow.*big grin* okay, I was very sad when it ended, cause it was really interesting and I think it might have eaten a piece of my soul….. >.>
Great job, reminded me of the movie ‘Quills’ .
Thanks, hope to deserve similar comments in future posts 😀
Great A-Z Challenge entry! I’m quite fond of my antagonist in my current WIP 🙂 Best of luck getting those writing prompts.
Hugs
Rach
It will show in your book Rachael, and your readers would love him too! Thanks for stopping by, and how about giving me a hand with the prompts ?;)
I enjoy reading your writing!
Duncan In Kuantan
Thanks…and happy to meet a Malaysian resident 🙂
Thanks Louanne and Yvonne!
Yvonne, I can’t reach you through the link on your name. Could you please leave a working link so I can visit you ? 🙂
A wonderful read, excellently written hope to read some more as the month progresses.
Yvonne.
Great start to the challenge, I love your style of fiction writing.
Way to start things up! Antagonist…yeah, those are actually something I have trouble with. I mean, I can’t see them as antagonists. The best example is Ben Linus from LOST…I just felt so sorry for him, rather than disgusted, as I probably should have been. *sigh* oh well. Good post!
Sarah Allen
(my creative writing blog)
Thanks, Sarah! Wish you better luck with you next anatagonist, and all the best for A2Z!
Hi and greetings from OZ…love the piece, well done. I look forward to reading more of your posts. Great idea using a fictional work.
Mine is here.
http://sooozsaysstuff.blogspot.com/2011/04/az-challengeday-1april-1st-2011-for.html
Thanks, Susannah. I dunno if I can go on with fiction throughout…depends on the prompts I get, and what I am able to do with them. will head over to your blog now 🙂
Nice one. Pretty creepy. A good start in the first fiction piece I’ve read in the challenge. Keep it going and you’ll be a hit in the A to Z.
Lee
Tossing It Out
Twitter hashtag: #atozchallenge
Thanks, Lee. Am not sure if I can sustain fiction throughout, but will try my best. More prompts would help 🙂
How creative!
Thanks, Summaiyah! Send me some prompts please 🙂
Great response to your prompt. Sometimes antagonists are the most fun to write 🙂
They are, Charmaine. Thanks for your kind comment!
Ok, so I missed the genre: fiction, and was thinking, wow, so much honesty – and how did they let you get access to a computer. Good luck from a fellow challenge participant.
LOL…To get access to a laptop, I massacred the hospital, of course :)….anyone would do that for A to Z challenge!
Just kidding…and thanks for the visit and comment 🙂
No worries, Corinne 🙂 . I do not own copyrights on word-prompts! Thanks for dropping by, and I will sure visit your blog once your post is up 🙂
Hooray for blogfests! I love that you used your prompt to write a fiction piece, I might have to
stealborrow that for a couple of my days. 🙂 Hope you’ll hop over to my blog when my post goes live at 1201 MST.
