A to Z challenge: The letter A: ANTAGONIST

Writing prompt for A to Z Challenge : Antagonist

The Antagonist, for A to Z Challenge

Writing Prompt: ANTAGONIST.

Provided by: Marian Allen, who is a fellow A to Z challenge participant. Go visit her! (after you’ve finished reading my post, of course ..:)…)

Genre: Fiction/Flash

————–

I‘m my own antagonist. Ask anyone, especially my doctor in her white suit, and they’ll tell you I need to be watched, and you need to watch yourself around me. Which is why they put me in this opium-scented white room, in white clothes, so I would not see colors.  Colors upset me, you see, and they’re scared of me when I’m upset. White reminds me of my clan.

I’m calm enough usually, especially when the doctor is here. It is a she, I know that, because her voice trills out of her round face-mask , playing on me, calming my nerves down, one by one. That is her job.

But through my half-closed eyes I see red. A silken wire of red has escaped her white hairnet, and now I have to see all of it. I’m going to grip her hand when she is not looking, and rip that mask away. But her hum is making me drowsy, my hands heavy.

And she is gone. They must have realized something was upsetting me, they monitor my heart from the outside. But now I know her hair is red.

I’ll wait till she comes in next time.
