What a writer wants to do is not what he does

Writer at Work

What a writer wants to do is not what he does, said Jorge Luis Borges. This is true of me today on so many levels, I can’t begin to list them all. I wrote what I didn’t want to write, I didn’t write what I wanted to write, I read what I didn’t want to read, and vice versa, again, and so on and so forth. Not such a rollicking day in the life of a writer as you can imagine.

So, the writers amongst you, have you done anything today that you did not want to do?

As a co-host, here’s another call to the month long A to Z Blogging Challenge starting this April : almost 1400 bloggers are signed up as we speak, and I have every hope that the number will cross 1500 by the time the list closes on the 2nd of April!

Rob, I'm sure you'll do just fine :). Breathe.

P V Ariel, the posts should go up on the correct date on your blog— i.e, A should be up on April 1 2012. Cut-off time is midnight your time, wherever you are, so that the post shows up as per the A-Z schedule. You'll find this schedule at the sidebar of http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com. Hope that helps.

I have a serious deadline for a sculpture and I am doing the A to Z too, So its not so much not wanting to do as not having the time to do. Although I will do in he end

    NO PRESSURE though …..PHEW

  • Thanks for taking the time to check out my blog and for your comments!

  • That quote is thought-provoking.

I'm signed up for the A to Z Challenge too. I can't believe how big it's become!

I slept later than I planned. I visited my mom, and didn't expect to do that. I ate too much at dinner. and I expected to go to bed early, but I'm up writing because I got nothing done today. I just spent the last hour researching era appropriate names because I realized I had too many names in my book that started with J. So yeah, today was a little odd.

  • I didn't do what I'd planned, either, but I enjoyed it, anyway. I'd hoped to do some more editing on the wip, but instead, worked on a couple really cool blog posts for April. (I'm weird … really enjoy doing the research for some of my posts.)

Oddly enough, I spent nearly my entire day writing my A-Z blog posts. It was good because they're all about my novel so it also made me think about where that's going (it's nearly done!). This will leave me free to spend most of April checking out other people's blogs, which I'm also excited about.

Some days are beter than others. Today, I pretty much did what I wanted to do.

  • Yes, I'm at work, and I definitely don't want to be doing this right now! (The work, not blogging.)

My project writing will sooner or later have me writing to the murderer who is in prison, something I have never done before. But it hit me yesterday when I had my notebook out dividing the questions I need to ask those involved in the story. It kind of spooked me a little :/
