When Your Shoes Want to Take a Walk

Singapore Skyline

I live in a country I could walk across, end to end, in less than a day. All twenty-two kilometers of it. If I were fitter, I’d probably do the other way across: 44 kilometers.

Living in a tiny young country like Singapore makes me want to step out every so often, take a flight to a place where the beaches are not man-made, where the history is longer than 200 years, where culture is not a mishmash, where the food is cooked with more emphasis on the quality ingredients than the procedure of cooking.

Travel is irreplaceable when you’re looking for a certain buzz of the body and mind, when you want to be relaxed and enriched at the same time.

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” – St. Augustine

How often does the travel bug bite you? Do you go on yearly breaks, or take a vacation whenever the mood takes you?

Before I moved from the US to Jordan, three years ago I traveled internationally for two weeks every year. That, and the Navy have allowed me to see a great portion of the world. Now, I travel regionally about once a month. Soon, I hope to begin traveling internationally again. Meeting new people in new (to you) environments is an astonishing learning experience. I think I’m a far, far better man because of my far-flung contacts.

  • I am not a traveller. If I could skip the driving/airplane part, I wouldn’t mind going out and seeing other places, but I can’t.

When I was younger and still had children at home I couldn’t afford to travel very often or very far. Now that I’m older and the children are grown and gone I have to leave town at least once a month or I would go stir-crazy. I live in a not so pretty or inspiring part of Texas, so I try to travel across country or overseas once a year or every other year. I want to see as much of the world as I can before I get too old to go anywhere. I wouldn’t mind visiting Singapore.

  • I didn’t realize Singapore was so young.
Sometimes I just crave smart culture.

I can relate…although the US is more than 22 kilometers…it’s very young and I often yearn for more history, more culture…I get to travel overseas about once a year…so blogging is an exciting way to travel virtually and share with others like you….

Dear D, this is why I travel almost every month – yes most of it is for work, but it’s really because I NEED to get out. Miss you!
