How Often Do You Blog and Why? #amwriting #blogging

I’ve been noting the frequency of posts by my blogging buddies via Triberr.com. (If you haven’t heard of the site, I suggest you check it out.)

Everyday, I log on in the morning, approving blog posts to go out in my twitter stream — and since Triberr has set a limit of 100 posts daily, I’ve begun to notice how many posts I approve, and from whom, each day.

Bottom line, some people post 5 times a month, and some take it to an astonishing 65!

Personally, I’ve always had a goal of two posts per blog per week, or 8 times a month, since I run this blog, and Daily (w)rite. I haven’t really managed that down the 4 years I’ve had both. I’ve sometimes gone on a month-long hiatus, or more.

To me, blogging is a pleasure, a sort of indulgence, and when I get busy, it is the first thing to go. I do miss my blog buddies, but sometimes writing, or life, has to take precedence. Besides, I find I often  don’t have anything worthwhile to say, and I don’t like the idea of posting just for the sake of it. Not that all my posts are stellar, but I know that an overwhelming number of them haven’t been a chore.

So how many times do you blog each month? What are your reasons for blogging the number of times in a month you do?

To the folks who post every single day or more than once a day: how do you manage it? Does it pay off? Does it ever feel like a lot of work?

65 a month??!! Unbelievable. Not something I envy or want to achieve. Its good to write random stuff but just for the heck of it? Nah!

I blog to build my author platform online and started with one post a week. After the rigors of A to Z, I figured that with some advance planning I could (should?) strive for two posts weekly, which I've been doing since June. I do enjoy blogging but find little energy/headspace left for writing. I'm coming up on my one year blogiversary this week and am reconsidering my blogging practices…not sure if I'll stick with this same schedule, right now.

Hi Amit, November somehow managed to turn crazy, so I don't have breathing space. Will get back to you asap! Than you for your patience.

  • As you noted, when I get really busy, blogging is the first thing that suffers. I had intentions on three posts per week, but that doesn't always happen. My book review blog is languishing. It isn't that I don't have stuff to post. I just don't seem to be able to make the time I need to get the job done.

Yep, blogging seems to always be the first one to go. Le sigh. Thanks, Joy, for stopping by after a while.

  • I post to my blog anywhere from 1-3 times per day. Mostly, twice a day. I do this because I am the type of person that will get out of the habit if I don't. I write varied content that including book reviews, book excerpts from my books (wouldn't want to get in trouble), tips and resources for other writers, super short stories from writing prompts (to keep the juices flowing), and posts of interesting new authors (mostly those following me on twitter but a few that aren't).

No, this is not a chore for me. The writing prompts can be difficult if I'm not feeling inspired, but it is usually more a matter of finding the time. My schedule can be crazy and erratic, with some days being fairly empty of distractions and others leaving me absolutely dead by the end of the day (like Monday where I was wedding photographer for my brother's wedding and was on my feet most of the day in 3.5" heels – painful!). All in all, I enjoy blogging and it is a lot safer (time-wise) than twitter, which can suck me in for hours at a time (Bad, Dani!).

  • I blog at least once a day. Mostly I blog twice a day (but have done 3 in one day before). I blog so frequently because I am the type of person that will stop something entirely if I don't make it a daily habit. I tend to post multiple times a day because my content tends to vary. I do book reviews, book excerpts (my books, not other people's – that could put me on shaky ground), tips and resources that would be useful for writers, super short stories I've written from writing prompts (just to keep the juices flowing) and posts promoting new authors (especially if they are following me on twitter).

No, it is not a chore. The writing prompts can be at times, if I'm just not feeling inspired, but I usually have several blog post ideas sitting on the back burner waiting for me to set them free. At this moment, I have three drafted blog posts waiting to reach completion and an additional two written down that are not started yet.

  • My blogging frequency has been all over the place since I started it. For a while, I posted three times a week but I found it really ate into my writing time. I now post once a week, and I'm happy with that. It provides a good balance.

The main exception to that is this week and next where I'm posting almost every day for my blog tour of The Big Smoke. If I have the time and motivation to post more than once a week, I will, but that's a bonus, not an expectation. 🙂

I really let the blog slide during this summer (a stressful time). Now, I'm trying to get back up to posting 3 times a week.

  • Jo says:

I blog 6 times a week, i.e. not Sundays. I blog because I enjoy doing it, I like to share recipes I find which sound good to me, or which I have enjoyed cooking and eating, and I just like to write. I don't write books, so I guess this is my writing outlet.

  • Donna Hole says:

I do eight to ten posts a month; lately I think its less though. Writing was always the first to go, but now I'm thinking about less blogging and more writing. I've gotten a few short stories published, and I want more, which means I better complete something.

I plan a blogger break during Nov and Dec and hopefully will get a lot of reading and writing done.

I try to post about 3 times a week (a Sunday devotion, a Wednesday book review and a Friday flash fiction), but it really depends. Some weeks I'm too busy to blog, and some weeks I get involved in some book launch/blog tour or whatever and then there are a gazillion posts.

I suppose I could be more consistent but… meh. 🙂

  • I blog 20 times per month or Monday thru Friday once per day.

  • mooderino says:

I blog twice a week (went down to one a week over the summer). No idea how people do more than that.

I have three or four blogs (honestly, I can't remember exactly….) I try to blog on at least one of them every day – and often blog on more than one. So I guess I'd be in the 40-50 a month area. No idea why I chose that. I just do.

    • Damyanti says:

You're just a prolific blogger, and that isn't a bad thing. I find people blogging on the same blog more than once a day tiring. But different blogs would mean different topics or audiences, and that's much better 🙂

  • I usually blog 3 times a week. I tried 2 times a week, but ended up with lots of ideas for posts that I wanted to post now (I'm a little impatient) so I went back to 3 times a week and that seems to be working out fine for me.

  • I post three times a week except during the A t Z Challenge. (That will make the Tribal Stream interesting next April, won't it?) Three days a week gives me time to recover in between and also guarantees I have something to say in each post. I want to make it worthwhile for people to read.

  • muthu says:

hmhm… a good topic you have brought up. I blog once a week and If I have ample time in my hands – go for the fifth post of the month. I think that- I am more into reading good and interesting stuff rather than drudging through constant updates. And I blog with the same policy in mind.

And yes, I too have wondered- how can people post multiple updates the same day. Waiting to see other readers comment. 🙂

    • Damyanti says:

I do get bogged down sometimes as well, and have been known to blog less than 4 times a month. If I have a writing deadline, my blogging drops off.
