Today, the A to Z April Blogging Challenge 2013 enters its second day. I’m co-hosting it on Amlokiblogs. On this blog, I’ll be featuring mostly indie-published book excerpts for the 26 days of April. I love reading, and supporting author-friends, and I find this is a good way to do both.
Today’s highlight is Book 4 of the Backworlds sci-fi series : Boomtown Craze by M.Pax.
Elevator Pitch: (Blurb, in this case, as this is a series):
In the far future, humanity settles the stars, bioengineering its descendents to survive in a harsh universe. To secure his future, Craze must propel his world into a more prosperous era. Only days away from the grand opening of his new and improved tavern, he is confronted by a loony Backworlder intent on mucking up his plans. Gaunt and trembling, she claims her spaceship is possessed. She also has a connection to the underworld that shakes loose the dark past of one of Craze’s closest friends. It all threatens to end Craze’s prosperity before it begins. Meanwhile off world, Captain Talos works desperately to outwit the mercenary Jixes and lure them away from his and Craze’s budding prospects. The mind-control weapon Talos uses against them is wearing thin, and his next move may be his last. Will Craze and Talos’s efforts bring about a grand new age of boom or damn them to forever struggle in the dust?
Excerpt: As if the universe hiccupped, moments ticked like days, freezing and suddenly freeing, lurching and tumbling. Dactyl had difficulty comprehending where he lay, who he was, and who hovered around him. Why was he on the floor? He’d seen the bullet, had heard it, could even smell its metallic char, but he’d not felt much of anything when it sank into his shoulder, just a kick. Like a cosmic sized boot aiming for him with the velocity of the galaxy.
He’d stumbled backwards, his arms frantically paddling in circles, and the next thing he knew he stared up at the ceiling — a timeworn gray that dimpled darker where it met the walls and corners, new patches of composite clashed with the old in pebbly splotches which cast the strangest shadows. The shadows devoured each other, cascading weirdly, narrowing his field of vision.

M. Pax is author of the sci-fi series, The Backworlds, and the new adult fantasy The Renaissance of Hetty Locklear. A Browncoat and SG fan, she’s also slightly obsessed with Jane Austen. In the summers she docents as a star guide at Pine Mountain Observatory where the other astronomers now believe she has the most extensive collection of moon photos in existence. No fear, there will be more next summer. She lives in stunning Central Oregon with the Husband Unit and two lovely, spoiled cats.
She blogs at www.mpaxauthor.com where you’ll find news, books, free read, and links to Twitter, FB, and other sites.

This sounds an interesting book. I shall check it out.
Mind control is a dangerous thing to handle in an already chaotic world. The corrupt spaceship thing sounds interesting.
