Last Tuesday I restarted participating in a bookish meme, in order to share some of my reading with you. I love that I can be alone while I read, but I can talk about the books I’ve read later.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Here are two teaser sentences from The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy:
“According to Esyha, if they’d been born on the bus, they’d have got free bus rides for the rest of their lives. It wasn’t clear where he’d got this information from, or how he knew these things, but for years the twins harbored a faint resentment against their parents for having diddled them out of a lifetime of free bus rides.”
This book is so crammed with runaway beautiful sentences, like gemstones in a box, all gorgeously heaped together in their apparent carelessness. I’m re-reading this because I want to examine how she handled time in the novel, but I keep getting distracted by its enchanting storytelling. Roy won the Booker for this one, and never wrote another novel. I, for one, would queue up for her book if she changes her mind some day.
Thank you for stopping by my blog and following me. Your blog is very refreshing and different. God of Small Things is a favorite of mine. She does write in beautiful lyrical English. I will explore your blog more, love the idea of writing something every day.
By the way did you recommend a book called Maud’s House? I feel as if I saw it on your blog but can’t find a post of it. I am reading it on a friends I-Pod and find I do not like reading that way but the book is great fun.
I like this idea. I haven’t been reading nearly as much as I used to though. Someone I met yesterday said the same thing. We wondered if it’s because we are older now. Not old but older (50’s). We decided that we might start a small book club as we both had so many good books to discuss. When I started my blog that was one of my main goals but I found it harder to do than I thought it would be and with the not reading as much that makes it difficult.
Oh, God, this is one of the most stunning books I have ever read. I love Arundhati Roy — her non-fiction is brilliant too.
That is a wonderful book. And it seems like an interesting meme. Thanks for sharing 🙂
Great idea for a book meme! I may have to try this. And thanks for visiting my blog. It’s fairly new, so it’s nice to see some people reading and/or following.
Nice teaser.
Thank you for highlighting the book, The God of Small Things. This is one of my all time favorite reads. I love the story, the language and the mystery of why Roy has never written another book. I have bought numerous copies of it for my friends. It is a writer’s and reader’s book. Thanks!
This book sounds interesting. My teaser is here: http://randomamb.blogspot.com/2013/06/teaser-tuesday-reunion-by-lauraine.html

The prose sound beautiful. I’ve only read a handful of books like this but I inevitably loved every one!
This one sounds delightful…I like the image of “runaway beautiful sentences.” My favorite things.

I could use free bus rides since I take the bus to work every day.

This book… My grandma recommended it, even bought it for me a year ago, but I haven’t opened a page. I don’t know, maybe the genre is not my favorite–I’m a Murakami fan–or the cover is not interesting. But after reading this, I think I’ll give it a try. 🙂
You’re so right. Her craftmanship is beautiful. If this is the only novel she ever writes, at least it’s one to be proud of.
This is a beautiful book. One of my favorites. Lovely teaser 🙂
One of my favorite books.Has such a gentle tone to it.
Awesome! I’ve often looked at this book and tossed up whether or not to buy it. I think next time I will. Thanks!!!
Glad that you stopped by. Nice place you have here! Teaser Tuesdays, what a fascinating concept.
What a great idea. I may try this one!
