This Tuesday, it is time for the teaser again, and this time it is by one of my fave authors, Michael Cunningham, A Home at the End of the World. This is a copy he signed back last November, and to my eternal shame, I’m reading it now after 10 long months.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Here are two teaser sentences from A Home at the End of the World:
“I don’t know if I can describe Clare, though I can see her right down to her lazy way of gesturing, loose-wristed, until she gets to the point of the story, when she flicks her wrist with the lethal precision of the fly fisherman. If I close my eyes she’s there, and she’s there if I open them, too.”
Blurb: “From Michael Cunningham, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Hours, comes this widely praised novel of two boyhood friends: Jonathan, lonely, introspective, and unsure of himself; and Bobby, hip, dark, and inarticulate. In New York after college, Bobby moves in with Jonathan and his roommate, Clare, a veteran of the city’s erotic wars. Bobby and Clare fall in love, scuttling the plans of Jonathan, who is gay, to father Clare’s child. Then, when Clare and Bobby have a baby, the three move to a small house upstate to raise “their” child together and, with an odd friend, Alice, create a new kind of family. A Home at the End of the World masterfully depicts the charged, fragile relationships of urban life today.“
I’ve always loved Cunningham’s lyrical prose, and in the shifting relationships of the characters in this book, I find more than enough to keep me reading. Insightful and moving so far, and I’m on the 136th page.
A well-composed post.
I haven’t taken part in your Tuesday reading adventure … but I will think about it. Hey I liked your guest writer’s post. So how is your current read, AT HOME AT THE END OF THE WORLD ? For a brief second I thought about Bodett’s book AT the End of the Road … More comical, an easy read … about life in Homer Alaska. Peace, T
Ooo! I like the sound of this book.
I always put off reading my signed books…I hate to wear them in!
I love this idea! And thanks for the great recommendation – I’ll pick up A Home at the End of the World as soon as I’m stateside once again. My teaser is for the magnificent Let the Great World Spin: http://jesslahitou.wordpress.com/2013/08/06/teaser-tuesday/
Sounds like an interesting read–glad you are enjoying it. My teaser: Sleeping With the Entity
I enjoy stories with unusual “families” like the one described here. Gotta read this.
Here’s my Teaser: Tougher Than the Rest
Sounds like an interesting read. Hope you enjoy. Here is my TT http://cynthiastacey.com/2013/08/06/teaser-tuesday-aug-6/

This looks fun! 🙂
This book sounds great! I’ve never read Cunningham’s work, but now I want to check out his books.
His books have been made into movies too. This one, and also The Hours.
Ooh, awesome! I’ve heard of The Hours, but not this one. I’ll have to check out the movies, too, once I’ve read the books. Did you prefer the book version of The Hours to the movie?
The book. The movie was good by itself, but the book offered a completely different experience.
Cool! Those books (and movies) are going on my list!
Wow…talk about two really sharp sentences…I’ll have to check this one out! Thanks for introducing me to another great writer!
I love both his writing, and his stories. You won’t be disappointed.
Well I hope that at least it didn’t take you 10 months to read the signature! 🙂
Lol no. But Cunningham was so jet-lagged in Singapore, it seemed like he took ten minutes to sign. He smiled, and was very nice throughout.
Ha! Jet-lagged my ass – my guess is that it was his attempt to prolong his moment with you. 🙂
Ah. Why didn’t I think of that? 😉 Probably because he rushed out for a much-needed coffee and cigarette right after. Without me :).
Haha – you’re funny – coffee & a cigarette – pretty much confirms my theory. My guess is the poor guy didn’t stand a chance!
Sounds like a story with a book in front of it? 😉
Can you tell that I just watched “Definitely, Maybe” over the weekend?
🙂 That Definitely, Maybe explains a lot of things.
lol…perhaps!
The little girl in it is the spittin’ image of one my girls at that age – really nice movie for a change!
