Writing on blogging: to blog or not to blog

I have been getting hundreds of visits from condron.us after submitting to their site. So the hit counter looks good. But the number of comments do not.

I have never been very good at getting comments on any of my blogs, but I think, even my writing blog, which gets fewer visitors, gets more comments. This blog, which many mention to me in conversations, Malaysians as well as people further afield, gets comments only from Darc, Annie, Kym and Indigo. Thanks, guys.

Time to upgrade my content on this blog, I think, which I’ve been using more or less as a journal. But recently, I’ve felt that I have a lot riding piggy-back on me, and I have hardly any energy left over for committed, enthusiastic blogging.

I suppose these are phases. For the last month I’ve preferred to write in my notebook, and do other kinds of writing—blogging has somewhat taken a back seat.

The question is: should I only blog when the urge takes me– which could be once a month–or keep tapping away everyday not only to justify the name of this blog but also hoping that I’ll get my blogging rhythm back?

To blog or not to blog is the question and the answer is a big Yes.From a personal experience I feel that as we grow ( I am 38) the external world starts losing its charm as it has only so much to offer and therefore it becomes important to create a world of your own.We have a word in hindi if you know it “Swaant:sukhay” which means for your own happiness. If God created the world for his own happiness what’s wrong in creating a blog for yourself.
As per statistics you will only get a comment for every 1000 hits on your blog.So if your average is better you are on the dot.Cheers !

Sometimes I really enjoy posts but don’t leave comments. Often, as someone implied above, I’m way behind in my blog reading, stealing moments to catch up. After the 365 project, which was so specific, I’ve given up on trying to blog every day, instead aiming for “often.” Maybe someday I’ll get back to feeling like I’m at least there.

You need to do what feels right to you!

  • It should not be a chore. And I get very few comments. I have my core and that’s about it but I know people read and that’s enough for now.

    Hi Damyanti:

My other blog site is The Everyday Bloggers on Blogspot, where 7 (or is it 8) of us undertook to take turns writing the blog for a week.

After a few months we were advised to cut blogging to every other day to give more people a chance to catch up. Then the idea has been to hold off posting anew if a particular post is still generating visits. I guess there is no rule that fits all.

My WordPress blog, The Wildcat’s Victory, gets a post a week and the stats line looks like the mountains of the moon. I could probably do two posts a week to smooth visits out.

I guess I’m too goal oriented, but I have to find a topic that I feel might interest people before I post something. My record visit day was the one where I promised to post the contents of a phishing e-mail from a Russian scammer who tracked me on Facebook.

Maybe I should make a practice of inviting Russian scammers.

Sometimes I write posts that are not relevant to the blog. Just keep on posting consistently despite the length and sometimes content. Bloggers do get ‘blocked’ at times.

I’m of the mind that you have more lurkers than commentors. Maybe have a “come out and say ‘hi'” day to encourage them to poke their heads out and speak.

As for what and how much you blog, do what pleases you. People are interested in you and you are interesting in turn. Posting pieces of your life, snippets of your world, has been a blessing to me, and I bet to others too.

Please yourself and they will come. Nothing wrong with not blogging everyday, regardless of your blog’s title. 😉

Be well Damyanti. I’ll follow along and speak to you every chance I’m afforded.
