Project Why Ambassador
For the A to Z Blogging Challenge, I’m blogging 26 days in April based on the alphabet and bringing you stories from the nonprofit Project Why.
Today, I bring you a story of one of the bright souls reaching out to help those in need of support at Project Why.
Younger siblings in India address their elder sister as Didi. At Project Why, kids call the lady volunteers from all over the world, Didi, and one of their favorites is Cat Didi.
Cat came to Project Why 11 years ago and has been back 9 times since. It was mutual love at first sight. She landed one fine morning with her Leeds accent in tow and gave Project Why many tickling moments: the children from the special section began to say ‘booter’ instead of butter, and ‘oombrella’ instead of umbrella.
Cat has an infectious joie de vivre : she’s a natural with special kids and they welcome her with huge smiles and shrieks of joy each time she comes back. When you see with a heart as big as Cat’s, big things happen. She’s been a super Ambassador for Project Why, holding many successful fundraising initiatives. When needed, she’s never hesitated to dip into her own pockets to ensure a child’s smile.
Why do these young people spend their own money and travel across the seas to land at Project Why to bring a little cheer in the slums? Perhaps language is no barrier when you speak the dialect of love. They leave a little of themselves in the hearts of those they have touched, big or small, and take a little of Project Why with them.
Cat made a special trip to hold Anouradha Bakshi’s hand when her husband was diagnosed with cancer. Project Why misses her each time she leaves and wants to ask her the question one or the other of the kids always does “Why are you leaving Cat Didi?”.

I’ve volunteered at Project Why and the feeling of love and fulfilment is indescribable. Would you like to be a Project Why Ambassador? If you cannot make it to New Delhi, could you Donate to bring a smile to a child’s face? What would you say to Cat Didi, and the kids of the special section?

This: “Perhaps language is no barrier when you speak the dialect of love.” Yes, love is the language that translates regardless of linguistics. Love this story and the beautiful pictures that illuminate the culture in India. Glenda from

It’s interesting to read about all of them, Damayanti! And I’m so glad you decided to showcase them! They deserve all this and so much more! 🙂
Super post, Damyanti. I’m especially proud of Cat…like her, having deep roots in Yorkshire….
In a sense we are both ‘tykes’…..ask her!
Love this phrase to describe her….”Cat has an infectious joie de vivre” Hugs!
I know a lot of Yorkshire folk and there are many with hearts ass big as Cat’s. I love your phrase ‘the dialect of love’. Along with the way you are using this challenge to promote this wonderful cause, it is awesome.
I’m just loving your challenge.
I’m kind of teary now…
She’s an angel.
What a special person she is! The world needs many more of her.
Cat is what I wish I was. Sigh.
