How do you keep track of your followers?

I must confess to being a very whimsical blogger. I try to make a total of eight posts a month on my two blogs, this, and Daily (w)rite— but I don’t make it sometimes.

I’ve blogged for six years now– and feel the need to either shut up or reinvent my blogging persona. Possibly the former.

In recent months, poor health and family situations have meant stepping back from my blogs a bit.

But when I check, I seem to have gathered a fair number of followers, and I don’t think I want to let them down.

I want to ask you, my friends and fellow-bloggers, some of whom have a much huger following than this blog– how do you blog?

Do you blog more than once a week?
How many blogs do you visit per day?
Do you blog in a niche, or is yours more of a general blog?
Do you participate in Bloghops?
What sort of advice do you have for me? ( I’m finding it tough to run two blogs, but can’t make up my mind about shutting one down).

Let me have your words of wisdom in the comments!

  • Hi, I am glad to have come across your blog. I have two blogs as well. I am not very regular- try to post thrice a week. I do participate in blog contests cause its exciting to get some benefits out of it. I do visit five to six blogs a day and that's when a topic interests me. My first blog- HALF A CUP OF HAPPINESS- is a general sorta blog. I blog about everything- my life, my kids, travel, food here and that gives me a lot of content to write about. My other blog WEBOOKREVIEWS (wordpress) is just about books and writers and i blog five times a month here.

Sometimes its okay to get bogged down with family commitments, that happens a lot with me as well, but do commit to writing at least thrice a week and keep commenting and following other blogs as well. Indiblogger is great when it comes to connecting other bloggers and thats how i met so many great writers. Hope this helps.

Hi D, Do not shut down any blog.

How about doing this? Make your less popular blog as your main blog now and then post the link of the less popular blog to the popular one slowly moving the followers from the popular one to the less popular one. This would help you to reduce the stress.

For some time only share your old blog posts and enjoy the comments by reverting to them.

  • Tara Nair says:

Hey D, I really suggest you to blog in both of your websites, because I believe you must keep doing what your heart tells you to. Its not really about the no. of followers that matter, it will build up with time. What matters is what you enjoy blogging. I blog once in a week and I had two months gap in between due to some reasons, but I landed up back to it not to shut down but to continue in full swing, because I love blogging. So you must too continue it irrespective of time, no. of blog and no. of followers. I hope this will help.

I have two blogs and each serves a different purpose. As long as it remains relevant to what you are doing or to your goals, keep then both. 🙂

  • Anita says:

Still learning Blogging & have many questions & looking for the answers 🙂
Yes, sometimes I blog more than once a week – 2-6 times a week!
Number of blogs I visit per day varies. Mostly while voting for IB & replying to comments on my Blog by visiting the readers.
I have a general personal Blog.
Can't imagine handling two blogs, hence have 1 where I put in my effort!

  • sweetyshinde says:

Hi, wish you would combine them into one blog. It's tough enough to follow one blog each of 'those who follow us' and 'those who we follow'.

Please think about it. And take care of your health. Prioritize it. This is

  • Do you blog more than once a week? On occasion.

How many blogs do you visit per day? I visit anyone who comments on mine. Other than that, the number varies based on how I'd have found them. (A hop, for example.) I try to visit at least 20 other blogs a month.

Do you blog in a niche, or is yours more of a general blog?

Do you participate in Bloghops? Yes I do. I love them.

What sort of advice do you have for me? Well, why did you make two blogs? Figuring out your reason might help. Which one do you love more? Flip a coin in the air, asking if "heads, this closes, tails, it stays." Before it lands, you'll know which you hope for. Forget the coin- go with the one you wanted while it was in the air.
As for the followers– how many are following both? The ones that aren't, are they regular commenting people? Do they still exist? (Blogs, emails, and social sites get abandoned. Just ask DL who redid Blog Blitz because of this.) Would the followers be willing to come over to the other blog?

  • Hi Damyanti… For sure a very inexperienced blogger compared to you, and am a huge fan of your blogs… Of course, not any where near your fan following :), but agree… it can be quite taxing. I used to manage four blogs, each with a different purpose, eventually moved to two and now back to three, each sort of being different.

I mainly write for myself, but without a doubt, a nightmare, often am up after a full day of work of 10 hour shifts, and then catching up on blogs including reading / commenting and also trying to put up my own posts at 1 and 2 AM… Burn out is an understatement

Personally, I try to do one to two posts a week, the challenge what I realize is when you have a mix, and you cant put all in one blog / site. I had never joined Blog groups before, have only recently joined them, and currently with my work schedule, not sure if I can cope with joining more.

Advise: I will be waiting for yours 😀

It was only last year I took a decision to write more regularly than the infrequent posting on my seven year old blog. It does work like a stress buster for me now, to take time out and focus on something else apart from work. Ever since I started participating in a weekly writing prompt I have been blogging once a week. I don't want to end up doing just that but with work schedules that is what it is for now. Hopefully I will get time to work towards my aim of writing more and not just as a blog.

    Hi Hello Maam,
I blog thrice a month as I give views on Stock markets based on its fundamental value so it takes time to research on those companies..Thanks for sharing
    Have a fantastic day Ahead

  • Shailaja V says:

I used to, but now it is once, maybe twice a week. And, yes, I have two blogs.
I try to visit those who drop by mine. Only because , given my recent health issues, I cannot manage more than that 🙁
Each of my blogs is a niche blog- one on parenting, another on fictio/writing.
I try and participate. Now and then. Used to do it a lot earlier this year, though.
Advice for you? I don't think I am qualified enough 🙂

  • mooderino says:

You might consider posting less often on one of the blogs. I don't think people really think about how often a blogger posts, their feeder tells them a new post is up and they go visit it. Once a month or once a day, I don't really pay much

    • D Biswas says:

This blog has slowed down a lot in the past months, so I guess I either have to post less frequently and visit more blogs, or post more and visit more blogs, if I want to boost it up again. Question is, do I want to boost it up again? Thanks for the tip!

  • I don't do bloghops because of time constraints.

  • There is no way I could keep up with two blogs. Mine started out to be just about books, but has evolved a bit beyond that to include sharing the most important part of my life – my family.
If I didn't visit so many blogs each day (over 100) perhaps I could keep to my desired blogging schedule of two per week. If you've visited my blog, that is something I seldom reach.
To make it easier on yourself, I would suggest combining your two blogs into one. You always have such interesting posts, I would be sad to see you give up blogging altogether. Once a week is a good enough goal (many of the blogs I follow only post once a week), but no matter what your schedule, life sometimes gets in the way of the blogging life, so you have to give yourself permission to step back and skip a few postings. It is supposed to be fun, not stressful. Hugs to you.

    • D Biswas says:

Thanks, Michelle. I need to see this in the right perspective. I wish I could visit 100 blogs a day. My life won't let me.

  • I blog randomly, and visit randomly (as I'm sure you know, sorry!) I used to do loads of bloghops when I first started, to gain followers, and find blogs to follow – but I'm much less keen now. I struggle to keep up with the blog visits ought to do, let alone gathering more!

    • D Biswas says:

I struggle to visit everyone I love, too. There are too many blogs I like to read, yours among them. Feel free do to drop by as often as you like. Or less often, if that's what you prefer 🙂

  • Birgit says:

My blog is creating cards but I also create fun pieces about film, my animals or whatever strikes me and I find it fun. I try to blog once per week but sometimes it is less as it depends on what is happening in my life. I have not counted how many I visit but it might be around 10 or so per day. Never stress about this-just enjoy and never worry. I couldn't handle 2 blogs…My mind would not allow it:)

    • D Biswas says:

Birgit, I think you're on to something with that one– I need to get back to my stress-free mindset about blogging. I've gotten away from blogging events this year, and that's a start.

  • Andrew Leon says:

There's no way I could handle two blogs. It's taxing enough that I contribute to another blog.

    • D Biswas says:

Andrew, I think it's a bad decision for me, too. But I feel too attached to this blog to call down the curtain on it. Who knows, I will, one day.

  • shelly says:

I try to blog at least once or twice a week on both my blogs. I try to keep them between 300 to 500 words. Keeping the word count down helps.

  • Blog twice a week.
Ready? Visit over a hundred blogs a day. (Average – some days more, some less.)
I guess the niche is entertainment, although I cover many topics in one post. (Something for everyone that way.)
I really enjoy this blog, although I know your other one gets more traffic. (Or at least a heck of a lot of comments in the first hour alone!) Of course, do those people know about this blog? Maybe it is time to shake this one down and do something different.

    • D Biswas says:

Alex, I blog twice a week on each (or try to) and I think that's getting me down.

The other blog has almost 25000 followers, compared to the combined 3 to 4 thousand on this blog– so, of course this one gets much less attention. I don't visit a 100 blogs a day, but I try to visit back everyone who visits me and then some besides. I try to share other blogs on social media, too.

You're right, this blog needs a revamp, but I don't know if I can afford to do it this year.
