Sixteen Years of Blogging, and Bookiversary! #IWSG

By 04/01/2024January 28th, 2024Featured
What about you? How was 2023, in retrospect? What are your plans for 2024? What milestone have you celebrated lately?

A milestone, no two, this week.

Sixteen years ago, I wrote the very first post on Daily (w)rite on the 5th of January.

One year ago, my literary thriller, THE BLUE BAR, came into this world on the 3rd of January.

The journey from that first milestone blog post to publishing THE BLUE BAR and THE BLUE MONSOON this year has been a long one.

I remember the days when it took me hours to write a page, months to write a short story, and years to write a book. Some of it is still the same, but what’s changed is my confidence: I now know that no matter how completely insane and impossible a story or a deadline looks, chances are, I’ll get it done in the end.

My books have challenged me with numerous deadlines, and you, my blog family, have seen me through each milestone. From the flash fiction of A to Z Stories of Life and Death, to the umpteen drafts of YOU BENEATH YOUR SKIN, to finding my first agent, and the publication of that book and its screen option. You’ve been around as I lost that agent and found me a new one, and landed a two-book deal with Thomas & Mercer.

THE BLUE BAR was a number one Amazon bestseller, and is still receiving lovely reviews. This book has made its own way, and I’m fortunate to have been its conduit. It’s the same book that lost me my first agent, and got me my next one. It taught me to enjoy the ride, the crests and the troughs, and that neither last very long. THE BLUE MONSOON is doing well, and who knows, I might even earn out my advance.

Mine isn’t one of those overnight success stories, but I’ve been fortunate enough to get by, and make a ton of good friends the while, friends I’ve thanked time and again over the years.

2024 is going to be a challenging year, personally and at work, but I’m ready for it. I might be scarce on here, and may even shift back to WordPress from my own domain—we’ll see—but I won’t disappear altogether. This blog has been a labor of love for the last sixteen years: as long as I’m given the privilege of leading a writing life, I’ll keep this blog a part of it.

What about you? How was 2023, in retrospect? What are your plans for 2024? What milestone have you celebrated lately? When did we meet in this blogiverse?

writing a thrillerThis is the first Wednesday of the month post for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group. Founded by the Ninja Cap’n Alex J. Cavanaugh, the purpose of the group is to offer a safe space where writers can share their fears and insecurities without being judged.

This is a wonderful group–if you aren’t a part of it, I urge you to join in! The awesome co-hosts for the posting of the IWSG are Joylene Nowell Butler, Olga Godim, Diedre Knight, and Natalie Aguirre!

I’ve definitely been less active than I’d like to be recently, too, but that’s okay! We all have things in life which keep us busy.

  • dgkaye says:

Wow 16 years blogging! That’s commendable Damyanti. Congrats and happy blogiversary! <3

    Double congratulations, Damyanti!

I’ve got my tenth anniversary coming up in March. A significant milestone, but not as long as you – congratulations Damyanti!

  • I’m so grateful that you’re still blogging. In contrast I’m a newbie blogger, with only 7 years under my belt (I think)! I really value your example and honesty along your journey. There are very few “breakout” novelists, true overnight sensations, I think–it’s just that we don’t often see all the hard work and starting over again and again that goes into a successful literary career. Thanks for bringing us followers and fellow bloggers along with you!

    • DamyantiB says:

7 years is amazing, Rebecca! I wish you a long and happy blogging journey ahead! Thank you for your kind words, I can’t tell you how much they mean to me. It’s wonderful to hear that you find such value in my blog — comments like yours which help push me through the hard times. Thank you for following along with me!

  • Olga Godim says:

Congrats on your blog’s anniversary. What an incredible journey.

Hi Damyanti – you must have started one year and a week before me … I’ll be back blogging again on the 13th … congratulations … you’ve done so much for us with your advice and introduction to authors and their approach to creative writing. I’ve had a bug and just got lazy … apart from a monthly dinner I help organise – which starts again next week. I wish you lots of success with your books for this year … and where they may lead you. With thoughts and all the best for 2024 – cheers Hilary

    • DamyantiB says:

Looking forward to seeing you back, Hilary! I’m so happy you’ve found my blog useful! I try my best to post content which is helpful to as many writers as possible, whether they be new or experienced, professional or just writing for fun. Thank you for following along and being so supportive all this time. Sending lots of positive vibes and good luck for this year!

Thank you, Alex! I couldn’t agree more. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined how far I could come over these last sixteen years!

  • Congratulations for both results achieved❤️

  • Congratulations on your blogiversary! Sixteen years is very impressive. I’ve been blogging for six years, and even in this time, I’ve seen a lot of blogs come and go. And congratulations on your book’s #1 selling status!!

  • Between heart attacks and hurricanes, I have had an … interesting … time attempting to write anything while working to pay off my medical bills. But I managed to finish and publish a new book. 2024 I hope will be a time of going forward not backwards for all of us! 🙂

    • DamyantiB says:

I hope so, too, Roland! Congratulations on your new book, and may 2024 bring you nothing but the best tidings, wonderful things, and all the writing wins. You’re an inspiration!
