I depend on writing prompts to kick-start my writing every morning I sit down to write.

Sometimes, I come out with utter nonsense, because timed writing does not work every day. But on other days, I come out with beginnings of stories, or sometimes even a character or two who need to keep talking and interacting so I can figure out what their story really is.

Right now, I’m writing two stories, one of which came from a writing workshop, and is taking forever to finish, and the other is a line I jotted down while out visiting.

But by far the most tried and tested writing prompt for me is visual, it lets my mind roam. It picks up on different threads of thought and dreams, and weaves them into narrative. Surprises me, sometimes. Those moments of surprise are the reason I write.
